A good ol’ fashioned chipper with a tasty modern twist
15 Jan 2013

Chevron Island Seafoods

In the same way beach barbeques and icy cold beers have become an Australian institution the good old fish ‘n chipper has long been an iconic staple of seaside cities across the nation.

Unfortunately, as the chipper institution has grown in this country, so too has the culinary murder of the simplistic fish and chip. I, myself, have more than once been lured into a quick bite only to be left reeling with disappointment from an inferior, poorly prepared piece of frozen fish or rubber like calamari.

On the Gold Coast there is one local ‘chippy’ that is not only a pure testament to our country’s love for crispy, battered fish and starchy golden spuds, but that also lives up to the reputation of this iconic household favorite.

Established in 1972, Chevron Island Seafoods is one locally owner-operated business that offers a tasty traditional menu with a fresh, modern twist, in a location just far enough away to avoid the hustle and bustle of the coast's overpopulated tourist strip.

From their extensive selection of fresh shellfish and cooked seafood, battered, crumbed and grilled fish, marinated octopus, steak sandwiches and monster burger range; to their healthy homemade salads, fried rice, fishcakes and sauces, this is one takeaway joint where you are spoiled for choice and served with that wholesome old school smile.

According to Chevron Island Seafoods Owner Warren, despite the seemingly straightforward nature of a fish and chip feast, a commitment to top-notch produce and passion for providing fresh and tasty food is paramount to a chippers success.

"The plain truth is you can’t expect to serve up flavoursome seafood or maintain a healthy comeback business without making quality a priority, or incorporating passion into what you do,” he said.

"As owner-operators we love nothing more than seeing people enjoy what we have prepared for them, and knowing that they feel so satisfied that they come back next week for more.”

Apart from their commitment to providing the highest quality takeaway and their passion for making simplistic food that caters to all their customers cravings – even the health nuts and dietary challenged – what makes at Chevron Island Seafoods so appealing is their fastidious attention to detail.

All their produce is sourced on a daily basis from local Queensland suppliers. Their menu is prepared fresh and made-to-order. All their sauces, salads and specialty items, such as steamed dim-sims and fried rice, are made on the premises and there is not a drip or drop of dirty oil in sight.

The Village Markets (TVM) Burleigh

If you’re looking for a reprieve from over-crowded shopping complexes or are simply craving some retail therapy of the less conventional kind, look no further than The Village Markets (TVM).

Teeming with emerging designers, artists and local creative talent, this fashion forward hotspot offers an utterly unique and authentically artful shopping experience, right in the heart of Burleigh Heads.

With more than 90 stalls, showcasing everything from handcrafted jewellery, quirky homewares, original art, craft and collectables, to a diverse range of boutique, vintage and one-off fashion pieces, you are destined to be bang on trend with any purchase you make.

Drawing on inspiration from other fashion focused markets, such as London’s world famous Portobello Road Markets, Co-Founder Marissa Bowden said the decision to launch TVM in 2008 was born out of a passion to share the creative talent quietly thriving on the coast.

"Contrary to the tacky, fashion starved stigma, the Gold Coast is a cultural hub full of so many talented creative types and emerging designers and artists,” she said.

"After travelling abroad, my business partner and I recognised, that the Gold Coast lacked a market platform to showcase these local talents.

So, the decision to launch TVM provided a well overdue opportunity for locals to showcase, engage and embrace the thriving vintage fashion and emerging designer scene.”

As a self-confessed, culturally hungry local this was not my first trip to TVM, but I must admit it had been quite a few years since I had frequented this distinctive shopping mecca.

So, when I recently wandered down the open-air aisles admiring the latest eclectic mix of stalls and wares at TVM, I was genuinely surprised at how effortlessly it had maintained its grassroots vibe, despite its significant growth.

With a cult social media following, strong online presence and a lot of hard work and dedication, Marissa said she is very happy with the way TVM has expanded without losing sight of their original vision.

"One of the reasons we have been able to grow so rapidly while maintaining a boutique fashion focused vision, is due to our dedication to digital marketing and a strict stall holder application process,” she said

"We have committed a lot of time and effort and couldn’t be happier with how TVM has both organically evolved and served as a launch pad for so much locally grown talent.”

Whether you have a weakness for shopping, a love of the unique or just wish to immerse yourself in the cultural scene of the Gold Coast, TVM is one local experience that will have you coming back for more.

Rain, hail or shine, The Village Markets are held at the Burleigh Heads State School oval on the 1st and 3rdSunday of every month, parking is free.

A Brazilian escape that won’t leave you red-faced

Bella Brazilian – Chirn Park

These days, an ideal Brazilian experience for me is not so much about caipirinha coconuts and colourful carnivals, as it is about finding a comfortable environment to expose my most private territory to a complete stranger.

Bella Brazilian at Chirn Park is one such destination delivering a Brazilian body escape that leaves you exuding the confidence of a South American goddess – no matter what’s on your beauty treatment itinerary.

With a complete range of waxing services on offer, rejuvenating facials and chemical peels, eight sun-kissed shades of body bronzing, and make-up artistry and lessons tailored to your taste, this is one local beauty spot well worth the trip.

Aside from their immaculate and super spacious treatment rooms, top of the range products and knowledgeable staff, what I really loved about Bella Brazilian was their commitment to going that extra mile to make clients feel at ease when at their most vulnerable.

Salon Owner Jenna Newell said that while anxiety is commonplace when it comes to body and beauty treatments – especially those of the intimate kind – it does not have to be an experience that people dread.

"Brazilian waxing is one of those taboo things that most people already feel really nervous and shy about, so there is nothing worse than walking into a salon and everything being so serious – this just makes people more nervous and they start to wonder what their beautician is thinking about them while down in that area!” she said.

"By embracing an element of fun and rejecting a stuffy serious attitude, our team of fully qualified staff provide the most professional beauty and body services in an environment that puts anxiety at ease, and leaves clients feeling more confident then when they first arrived.”

What is so refreshing about Bella Brazilian is not only do they embrace anxiety with an understanding attitude and warm smile, but how their genuine value for customer care is seamlessly embedded into every aspect of their business.

They encourage clients to become more knowledgeable, express reservations and ask questions; they thrive on teaching the tricks of trade so you can be self sufficient in make-up application for that special occasion; and they even devote a decked-out space for the kiddies to be entertained, allowing busy parents to receive their 30 minute beauty or Brazilian fix.

Nobbys Arc Pizzeria and Bar.

With a heavenly menu in which I could have easily devoured two of each and every dish, there is in my opinion, no more appropriate name for my most recent Gold Coast dining experience.

Exuding a contemporary upmarket feel without the elitist attitude, Nobbys Arc Pizzeria and Bar is one local haunt reinvigorating the trendy Nobbys Beach dining strip, one sumptuous sharing plate at a time.

Abuzz with an electric vibe that spills beyond the interior and onto the sidewalk, Nobbys Arc effortlessly enveloped me with its intoxicating communal atmosphere before I even had a chance to take my seat.

Decked out with an understated décor that features solid timber and steel table settings, fisherman light fittings, exposed pipes and brushed concrete walls, Nobbys Arc delivers a modish industrial design without feeling cold or uninviting.

At just one look at the menu with its ambrosial tapas sharing plates, inventive gourmet pizzas, simplistic pastas, soulful desserts and creative drink list, it is pretty clear this place was designed to be enjoyed in the company of friends.

Being the glutton that I am, I opted to indulge in the tapas sharing plates – a choice that literally took to my palate to paradise! I just could not get enough of every magnificent mouthful of lemon pepper calamari with aioli and burnt lemon; lamb meatballs with side of spicy tomato salsa and garlic yoghurt; the zucchini fritters topped with dill crème fraiche; grilled haloumi with fresh parsley; and my absolute favourite, the spiced pork belly on caramelised apples with crackling.

The flavour, quality and affordability of each sumptuous sharing plate at Nobbys Arc is impeccably matched by their cool collection of local beer and wine, and their creative cocktail and shooter concoctions.

From the Oreo, Bomber and Plush shooters, the Chilli Bin, Lemon Meringue and Apple Rhubarb Crumble cocktails, to the ever-popular local brews including the Hef, My Wife’s Bitter and Matilida Bay Beez Neez, there is something on the menu to appease the thirsty and impress even the staunchest alcohol enthusiast.

Aside from their unsullied ability to deliver top-notch cuisine and blissful beverages in an uber-cool setting, and at prices that don’t leave you high and dry, what makes Nobbys Arc so appealing is their authentic all inclusive approach.

As Nobbys Arc Owner Scott explains, this is one venue with a passion for providing an all-round experience where locals and visitors alike can come in and share a drink, bite to eat and quality live entertainment.

“We want customers to feel relaxed and like they have had a great night of entertainment… and that’s what we try to achieve by providing an affordable entertainment package which allows people to come in, enjoy their food and drinks, and just kick back and listen to the live music,” Scott said.

“We foster this approach and maintain our chilled out atmosphere by offering a menu that can be shared with friends, engaging friendly staff, providing professional customer service and by avoiding express dining… you will never find us double booking tables, if you book a table it is yours for the night, whether you stay five minutes or five hours.”

Nobbys Arc Pizzeria and Bar is without a doubt one dining experience that embraces the idea of treating meal time as a celebration, it encourages you catch-up and enjoy some wining and dining time with friends and undeniably delivers on all fronts with their grade-a dishes, drinks and approachable service.

From remedial, deep tissue, pregnancy and relaxation massage, to lymphatic drainage, hot stone therapy and an indulgent list of body wraps, exfoliations and hydration treatments, you are sure to find just what your body needs to melt away the daily grind at Total Essence Massage.

Aside from their team of professionally qualified therapists, what I really valued at Total Essence Massage was their holistic approach to treating the body and their genuine commitment to assessing and treating each client individually.

Established in Paradise Point ten years ago, Total Essence Massage Owner Monica said their success and strong client base can be attributed to their holistic approach and genuine passion to treat every person as a priority.

“We are strongly committed to a holistic approach in relieving pain and rejuvenating the body with massages and specialist treatments, while also teaching people how to foster better health and wellbeing for themselves through simple practices such as stretching and posture,” Monica said.

“Our long success is embedded with a genuine passion and desire for our clients to leave feeling relaxed and less stressed then when they first arrived… it is not just about the massage or particular treatment, it is about looking after the client and making sure they are happy, relaxed and at ease.”

In addition to their authentic passion and professional commitment to treating each client with the highest quality therapies, what struck me most at Total Essence Massage was how seamlessly their holistic approach to health and wellbeing is filtered down to every aspect of their business.

Unlike many of their competitors, they don’t try and incorporate beauty services, preferring to focus on treating your body – and treating it well. Their rooms are clean and exude ambience, they only use top of the range products and they offer a range of organic and allergy friendly options.

Finally, to ensure your experience is relaxing from the get-go, Total Essence Massage leaves a gap either side of your appointment, so I didn’t feel rushed out the door! They also provide facilities such as HICAPS and SMS appointment reminders, and keep clients informed with monthly newsletters.

With a decade of experience up their sleeve, an authentic client focus and a holistic approach to health and wellbeing, Total Essence Massage will reboot even the most ragged and rundown body and soothe that stressed out soul.

Aquadiva

In a market flooded with itsy-bitsy bikinis and barely there swimsuits that have as much practicality as a screen door on a submarine, it is refreshing to discover a locally made swimsuit range that is both functional and makes you look and feel like a glamorous beach goddess.

Aquadiva is one home-grown swimsuit company reinventing the concept of active swimwear and inspiring a new era of beachgoers with their vibrant designs and boutique resort wear handcrafted to survive the harsh effects of summertime activities.

With a divine range of one-piece suits and separates, an eclectic collection of vivacious prints and sexy basics, and light, easy-to-wear kaftans, swim skirts and tank tops, Aquadiva has something to compliment your bikini body no matter what your taste, shape, or size.

Design genius and Aquadiva Owner Alison Appleby likens the investment of their products to that of a piece of art – both, beautifully crafted and guaranteed to be of value for years to come.

“All Aquadiva designs are created by our studio artists and are sampled in our print department using techniques that transfuse the fabric fibres with ink, ensuring they are bonded for life with the most vibrant colour and design detail,” Alison said.

“The fabrics and trimmings we use are super soft and durable and come with a genuine guarantee to last at least 1000 hours in heated, chemically-treated water and resist fading from sunlight, salt and chlorine.”

Visiting Aquadiva’s boutique store in the exclusive Oracle building at Broadbeach not only had me drooling over the racks of glamorous garments and ever-so sweet seaside accessories, but also left me with a new appreciation for swimsuit shopping.

The store itself is a design masterpiece and emanates the spirited, summery vibe so evident in Aquadiva’s swimsuit and resort wear products. From the digitally printed beach scene lining the entire ceiling to the bright yellow glass-blown sun chandelier; exquisite pearl shell cabinets; ornate whitewash frames; woven bamboo walls; and spacious change rooms decked out with nautical stripped cushions, Aquadiva manages transform your shopping experience into a relaxing tropical island adventure.

Aside from their beautiful range of products and incredible store design what I also loved about visiting Aquadiva was their expert team of passionate and dedicated staff whose professional, no pressure approach put that ‘dreaded swimsuit search’ feeling effortlessly at ease.

You too can drool over Aquadiva’s entire range including their custom children’s line, guys garments and beach accessories, by visiting their online store, social media sites or simply heading down to their boutique shop for the full experience.

Sun Studio Tanning - Parkwood

Whether you are seeking a set of luscious lashes, a sun-kissed complexion, a-grade acrylic nails, professional hair removal or a massage to simply melt the stress away, Sunstudio Tanning is one Gold Coast beauty salon guaranteed to satisfy the most fastidious femme.

Now let’s be honest, we all have at least one beauty treatment we obsess over. I, myself have an unnatural fixation for manicured nails. In fact when it comes to my nails, I have been known to drive my husband to the pinnacle of boredom, to a place where his eyes glaze over and his face involuntarily becomes a vague void staring into infinity.

Over the years, he has not only cringed as I’ve morphed from ‘brainy’ to ‘bubble-head’ at the mention of acrylic, but also witnessed me mourn the death of my French-tips at the hands of an unskilled professional.

However, the reality is no matter how neurotic or downright insane our other halves think we are, when it comes to beauty treatments, nothing is more important than knowing you are in the capable hands of an expert, who understands the importance of quality products and professional, friendly service.

Salon Owner Nadine said Sunstudio Tanning understands the importance good beauty therapy and takes pride in the services and products they offer clients.

“We pride ourselves on ensuring our customers receive the best possible beauty and tanning services in a comfortable, hygienic and professional environment,” she said.

“We use only the best products on the market, our sun bed bulbs are regularly replaced and our staff are professionally trained to make you feel comfortable and at easy with your beauty requests.

“We want customers to walk away feeling special and not like they are just a ‘number’ walking in the door and we hope people walk away thinking we went over and beyond to help them with their beauty needs.”

In addition to their commitment to high quality professional services and superior products, what I found most appealing about Sun Studio Tanning Salon was their ‘one stop shop’ approach to beauty therapy.

As a busy woman, it was genuinely refreshing to be able to visit a salon and have all of my beauty needs efficiently catered for in one spot - something you simply cannot get from their competitors on the coast!

Located in Parkwood, the newly refurbished Sunstudio Tanning is spacious, clean and exudes just the right amount of ambience to make even the most beauty obsessed feel at ease while standing in paper underpants receiving a spray-tan.

“I like that the pizza menu stays the same as I think there is nothing worse than discovering the most delicious pizza combination and then it not being on the menu next time you go to order it,” she said.

“However we do think it is important to offer variety and keep customers interested, which is part of the reason why we have recently introduced a gelato bar.”

With evolving to-die-for flavours including Mars Bar, Toasted Marshmallow, Lemony Lemon and Cookies Night Out, this homemade gelato is the perfect accompaniment to your slice of pizza heaven.

You can stay up-to-date with all the latest in-store New York Slice giveaways and specials, or simply drool over the delicious pizza and gelato pictures through their newly launched Facebook and Instagram pages.

Seafood lovers will take delight in the Coast Kiss with deep fried shrimp, soft shell crab and tuna drizzled in tangy sauce; the Kaizen Roll with lobster salad, soft shell crab, avocado and Unagi sauce; and the Scallop Volcano featuring crab, avocado, cucumber and scallops cooked with fresh mushroom and Unagi sauce.

Those who wain at the words Wagyu beef, should not pass-up the Wagyu Steak or Reef n Beef roll with its prawn, lobster salad and avocado centre, adorned in freshly sliced Wagyu beef. Subsequently, if your penchant is for poultry, be sure to get those chopsticks into the tasty Chicken Teriyaki, Chicken Karaage and Chicken Katsu dishes.

Vegetarians will also relish in the flavour fusion at Kaizen Sushi with the succulent sweet omelette nigiri, crispy tempura vegetables, Agendashi Tofu with tempura sauce, Miso or Edamame soup and the delectable bamboo roll with cucumber, seaweed salad, yellow radish, avocado, Kanpyo and asparagus.

In fact, one of the most appealing aspects about dining at Kaizen Sushi is that there are no pre-made plastic plates being churned out on a revolving train, you don’t have to eat your meal crammed side-by-side on bar stools and there is not a single disposal chopstick, moister wipe or sauce satchel in sight.

With their clever balance of flavours, welcoming and optimal standard of service and inviting restaurant and bar layout, Kaizen Sushi offers a casual Japanese dining experience with a dash of class.

Sneak N'Destroy - Mermaid Beach

The 90’s were the wonder years of my youth. It was a time when Mario and Mortal Combat kicked-ass,  extreme sports was in its element and grunge music was revolutionary.

It was also a pivotal time in the world of fashion when the subcultures of surf, skate and hip-hop gave birth to a new brand of streetwear and kicked-off a cult following which has reached far in to the millennium.

Sneak and Destroy is one Gold Coast store inspiring a new generation of street hungry followers,  captaining the cult into the future and seamlessly re-inventing style to deliver a fresh fusion of hip-hop and skateboarding culture.

With a hybrid collection of limited edition sneakers and casual-wear, incorporating urban in-your-face graphics, killer colourways and vintage throw-back designs, Sneak and Destroy is a one modern male boutique without the preppy metro-sexual name-tag.

Store Owner Rob explains unlike your typical franchised skate shops, Sneak and Destroy is decked out with a distinctive range of worldwide brands that you won’t see every Tom, Dick and Harry rocking out.

“Growing up on the Gold Coast as a self-confessed sneaker head, it was blaringly apparent that although the local scene was flooded with run-of-the-mill  skate and surf shops, it really lacked stores with an authentic sneaker culture,” Rob said.

“We make a point to source genuine, limited edition stock from leading brands, inspired straight from the streets of  Australia, New Zealand, the United States and the United Kingdom, so you are unlikely to see everybody wearing the same thing as you as you can’t buy our products from your malls and franchised stores.”

With their own ever-expanding line of custom designed streetwear, SXD, and their lassie fare sales approach, Sneak and Destroy’s  genuine love for sneaker culture extends far beyond their unique range of globally sourced merchandise.

“We are hugely passionate in developing  and creating unique designs for our own line of tees, sunglasses, beanies and five panel  hats, at the moment for example, we have a custom range of t-shirts featuring pocket prints constructed from authentic vintage 80’s print fabrics,” Rob said.

“I think it is this passion that makes the Sneak and Destroy experience a success, everyone who works in-store is friends, we all grew up together, we all really believe in the brand and we all just really love our jobs, this resonates with our customers and is reflected in the general vibe of the entire store.”

There is no doubt Sneak and Destroy is one retail experience that will leave you all stitched-up! With their own fresh, flavoursome brand of merchandise; shelves stocked with globally sourced snapback caps, sneakers and threads;  impressive collection of  90’s cartoon and comic book figurines; original Smurfs wallpaper; and the gigantic transformer mural greeting each sneaker-junkie that walks through the door,  this is one Gold Coast store that embodies true sneaker and streetwear culture.

From an enticing entourage of entrees, morish mains, succulent selection of side dishes and sultry desserts which will make you shiver with delight, Oskars on Burleigh takes you on food journey far beyond the blue horizon.

As I sat on the deck, perched perfectly over Burleigh’s golden stretch of sand, with the salt air kissing my face, beach break lapping at my feet and the famed glitterstrip staring me in the face, I just could not pass up the opportunity to indulge in Oskars’ delicious delicacies of the sea.

Sipping on my Sauv Blanc, I made the most of every magnificent mouthful of the freshly shucked oysters with baked creamed spinach and gruyere; seared scallops served with celeriac puree, chorizo sausage and roquette cream sauce; signature Oskars prawns with fried coconut, macadamias and curry mayonnaise; a side of English spinach, crispy bacon, pear and walnut salad drizzled with a blue cheese dressing; and the chocolate symphony dessert consisting of chocolate gelato with pistachio sand, chocolate panna cotta and chocolate meringue tartlet.

With fresh, flavoursome and innovative cuisine, a reputation backed by a long list of industry awards and an unforgettable iconic location, Oskars on Burleigh provides guests an extraordinary dining experience like nowhere else on the Gold Coast.

Hollywood dreams and movie magic
21 Sep 2012

Movieworld - Coomera

Growing up with one Batman obsessed brother, another who refused to remove his Superman outfit, a third who was loco for Looney Tunes and a father who drooled over Cat Woman, Warner Bros. Movie World was definitely the hit holiday destination of my youth.

Fast forward 20 years,  and while my brother has ditched the Superman strides for Saba suits, Movie World has continued to bring a touch of Hollywood to Gold Coast residents and Cat Woman has remained the drool drawcard for fathers and husbands alike!

Boulevard of dreams
With every step of Movie World’s Main Street reminiscent of the world-renowned Hollywood Boulevard, you would be forgiven for forgetting that you are on Gold Coast  when wondering down this cleverly constructed route.

Home to endless show spectaculars, unique shopping adventures, themed eateries and never-ending appearances from your favourite superheroes and Hollywood heart-throbs, Main Street brings to life your movie imagination and is the gateway and centre stage for your magical Warner Bros. experience.

Let your imagination be carried away and explore the Harry Potter store and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory candy shop, take a trip down memory lane at the Movie Memorabilia store, glam it up with garb from the Warner Bros Boutique, or simply grab a bite to eat, pull-up a patch of grass and watch the magic unfold before you!

Lights, Camera, Action!

Shine that spotlight, draw those drapes and queue the music  for a showtime line-up set to smash your personal box office! From burning rubber and adrenaline fuelled stunts, voracious villains and superhero saviours, to moviestar glamour and cowboy chaos, Movie World has something to entertain the penchant of people young and old.

Action-packed adrenaline junkies can’t miss the breath-taking stunts and  precision driving of the
Hollywood Stunt Driver show, the wild battle between Sherriff and  Black Bart in the Western Town Show Down, or the good old-fashioned hero versus villain face-off in the Batman Shadows of Gotham show.

While the star-spotting obsessed should be sure to catch the moving Marilyn Tribute, groovy Austin Powers street prance and  the All Star Parade featuring  the entire cast of Warner Bros Movie World characters such as Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes, Scooby Doo and the Mystery Gang,  and all your favourite DC Superheroes and Villains.

A show adventure that everyone is sure to enjoy is the Main Street 4D Cinema   experience. Featuring different productions all year round, this attraction takes you on  sensory journey like no other using a combination of visual and simulation effects.

Super speeds and thrilling screams

A sure-fire way get in touch with the powers and characteristics of your favourite superheroes is to hop on board and experience Movie World’s many exhilarating themed thrill rides.

Fly high and hit speeds of 100km in a matter of seconds  on the Superman Escape Coaster;  turn green as you a take on the steepest inverted drop in the Southern Hemisphere on the Green Lantern;  Shock your socks off through the g-force of  five stomach-churning inversions on the Arkhum Asylum Shock Therapy ride and; outstretch those wings and embrace the bat within as you are flung 60 metres toward the sky on the Batman Spaceshot.

Now if like me you don’t believe magic is made at super speeds and sicking g-force, Warner Bros Movie World has it covered with a collection of rides to suit even the biggest scaredy pawdy cats.

Take an adventure through a land of ghouls and gargoyles with Scooby Doo and the gang on the Scooby Doo Spooky Coaster; discover the wild, wild west as you travel through Indian reservations and ghost towns, to eventually drop to water depths below, on the Wild West Falls Adventure Ride and;  join Wile E Coyote through the twists and turns of the Arizona Desert on the Road Runner Rollercoaster.

Ah what’s up kids?

Re-live your childhood or bring your child’s imagination to life with Movies World’s Kids’ WB Fun Zone.  This zany cartoon world features all the littlies favourite Looney Tunes characters and provides endless opportunities for kids to kick back and enjoy the magical land of imagination.

Featuring a special stage performance What’s up rock? the Looney Tunes Splash Zone and variety of  kiddy-friendly rides including the Taz Hollywood cars; Sylvester’s Pounce ‘n’ Bounce;  the  Yosemite Sam Railway;  Sylvester and Tweety Cages;  Looney Tunes Carousel and; Speedy Gonzales’ Tijuana Taxis, your kids will be left endlessly entertained  and squealing with excitement.

An extra touch of magic
If you want a Hollywood experience with an extra touch magic, or wish to host an event oozing with individuality and glamour, Movie World has a variety of experiences to suit your needs.

Whether it be a Looney Tunes birthday bash; a Sicilian dinner complete with Al Capone show-down; a Scooby Doo Spooky Island Adventure crawling with creepy characters, fire jugglers and bongo drummers; a star-studded cocktail party or gala dinner featuring live bands and Hollywood Tribute Show; a western- themed blazing saddle shindig, with live performances and saloon girls;  a Moroccan inspired feast fit for a king; or even your most special day of all… tying the knot with your better half! Whatever your dream may be, Movie World will bring it to life with the magic of Hollywood!

Final Word…

The nostalgia I felt as I witnessed the next generation of excited kids kitted-out in their favourite superhero costumes; and as I watched as my own husband gawk at the spandex-laden Cat Woman, not only bought a smile to my face but made me reflect on the great success of this local attraction.

Warner Bros Movie World  is not just a place offering endless activities, experiences and first class Hollywood adventures, it is a place that inspires laughter and creativity, a place that entertains and amuses, a place that brings imagination to life, and a place where being a movie star, superhero or villain is possible… if only for a day!

Uber cool style cubed

Cubic Collective | Surfers Paradise

With more and more young business owners popping onto the local scene in recent years, the Gold Coast is fast becoming a cultural hub for uber cool fashion and sauvé style.

Cubic Collective is one fashion store that is bang on trend, leading the cultural revolution, revolting against the skimp and reinventing the style stakes.

With a perfectly balanced mix of simple t-shirts, to-die for denim, silk basics, beautiful dresses and statement pieces, Cubic Collective’s range of high-end streetwear has something to offer men and women alike.

Sifting through the stocked shelves, it is apparent each pressed piece has been deliberately hand-picked and purchased to meet the strong design image, the love of easy-to-wear fashion and the desire to inspire, excite and encourage people of all ages to embrace a new breed of cool.

Cubic Collective Owner Julia says fashion is much more than the clothes you wear and has the potential to positively transform a person’s perspective and leave them feeling confident, comfortable and completely at ease.

“At Cubic Collective we aim to provide a premium grade service to help people feel comfortable with creating their own unique brand of fashion and style,” Julia said.

“We believe in taking people on a fashion journey, encouraging people to let go of their style inhibitions and embrace a willingness to try something new without compromising what they feel comfortable in.”

Cubic Collective’s expert and experienced staff and their impressive list of local and international designers, make embracing a new look or sense of style easy.

With winter just around the corner, you are bound to find endless opportunities to reinvent your wardrobe at Cubic Collective. From oh so sexy leopard print Ksubi’s for the ladies, to amazing Sunnyside Smart Kids Club stonewash suiting jackets for the men, the potential is only limited this season by your attitude.

When asked to pick her favourite piece in store, Julia cheekily replied with a strong and serious undertone - ‘That is like asking me to choose between my children!’

However she did have this final piece of advice…

“Everyone underestimates the power of a basic plain tee… I am forever dressing girls in really hot statement skirts and just a plain t-shirt and it is mind blowing just how sexy this look is… never, ever underestimate the power, beauty and wearability of a basic tee,” Julia said.

Evolution of a Dream
21 Aug 2012

Growing-up on the Gold Coast, I have watched the natural evolution of local attractions over the years. Just like Darwinism itself, this has indeed been a case of survival of the fittest… or in this instance, survival of the most fundamentally fun!
Dreamworld is one such attraction which has continued to evolve and offer locals a fun-filled day packed with jaw-dropping experiences designed to take your breath away.  With thrill rides, family friendly shows and activities, interactive experiences, intimate animal encounters and endless themed photo opportunities, Dreamworld will please the penchant of visitors young, old and everywhere in-between.

Seven Screaming Sins

I am by choice a ground dwelling creature, so stepping foot on each of Dreamworld’s big seven thrill rides not only educed a surge of heart-pounding anxiety and breathlessness, but also created sheer unadulterated amusement for my dear, loving husband!

While he sat back grinning and giggling his way through the gravity defying G-force of the BuzzSaw, Claw, Tower of Terror II, Cyclone, Giant Drop, Shockwave and Wipeout, I gripped the safety bars, knuckles turning white, screaming so intensely that I’m certain park visitors could have mistaken it for a horror movie slaying!

All in all my hubby found the ‘seven screaming sins’ exhilarating, so much so that before I had even pried my fingernails from my body harness, he was already queuing for a second round… me on the other-hand, I was just grateful I did not repeat my year nine Dreamworld excursion experience and left each ride with my bladder still firmly intact.

G-rated thrills

If like me you prefer less spine-tingling amusement rides which still rock your socks off or are simply looking for something to keep the kids endlessly entertained, Dreamworld has it covered!

Satisfy your G-rated level of thrill-seeking with some of the classics – the Rocky Hollow Log, Thunder River Rapids and Reef Diver rides – or take the family for a park tour on the vintage style railway.

Alternatively, you may wish to bring your child’s imagination (or like in my case, your own childhood) to life with four colourful and creatively themed worlds.

Meet the life-sized characters from Shrek’s Faire Faire Away land, meddle in the madness of the Madagascar Live show or wiggle your way around the world with Dorothy, Captain Feathersword and Wags the Dog.

Natural beauties and beasts

As an avid cat lover, the beautiful beasts inhabiting Tiger Island have always rated high on my ‘favourite things’ list at Dreamworld. As the park has evolved, so too have the experiences you can share with these engaging endangered species.

With a flurry of daily public presentations and more intimate experiences up for exploration such as a majestic morning stroll with a big Bengal cat, a daring lunch date in ‘The Lair’ and a private patting and posing sesh with these beautiful beasts.

There are so many opportunities to discover the wonder of this jungle royalty and the best thing is when you join in one of these encounters, you gain a tick on your good deed of the day calendar as a portion of the cost goes toward the Dreamworld Wildlife Foundation which is helping save tigers in the wild.

When it comes to natural beauties and beasts, the buck does not stop here! There are endless ways to activate your animal instinct with Dreamworld’s many wildlife experiences – get up close and personal with some native favourites, feed a prehistoric predator, relax with a sheep shearing show or sunset safari or snuggle a soft marsupial.

Sweet beats, burn-outs and barrels

If you want to experience something a little more edgy and interactive be sure to check-out Dreamworld’s alternative attractions!

You can burn the bitumen Bathurst style in a virtual V8 supercar experience; show off your smooth ‘Slater’ surf skills and hang-ten in a flowboarding session; scream yourself silly to the sounds of sweet DJ beats with Screamworld - Dreamworld’s only after-dark party; or don your laser weaponry and rescue the human race from Aliens and Predators!

The final word…

Twenty years on from my first Dreamworld experience, I can firmly say that this is one attraction perched on the alpha end of the evolutionary chain for Gold Coast activities.

While the dream has continued to evolve, as a local, it is reassuring to know that one thing remains the same, whether you’re young, old or any age in-between, Dreamworld guarantees you a day crammed full of fun and entertainment!

As a self-established ‘foodie’ I thought I had well and truly set my top five restaurant experiences in stone, that was until I discovered this little gem! In fact, since dining at Little Truffle, I have not stopped dreaming of each and every portion of pure magic which I devoured.

Every magnificent morsel melted in my mouth! From the beef carpaccio with quails egg, truffle mayonnaise, fried capers and parmesan croquettes; the tempura zucchini flowers stuffed with Persian fetta and served with tomato relish; the braised rolled pork belly with seared scallop and pea and mint puree; to the assiette of desserts including a chocolate petit pot with cherry compote and hazelnut praline; vanilla bean panna cotta with raspberry rose jelly and rose granita; warm chocolate pudding with caramel, double cream and honeycomb; and petit strawberry soufflé de jour.

Little Truffle is by all sense and meaning of the word, a little gem. It is not just somewhere to eat, it is a place to experience passion and hospitality at its finest, a place to indulge on a sensational journey and a place that I now consider as the epitome of dining on the Gold Coast.

A boutique oh sew unique!

Don't Tell Fannie  |  Nobbys Beach

In the era of department stores, shopping complexes, and ‘Made in China’ garments, it is reassuring to find an independently owned boutique with an authentic passion for chic individual style and a pure patriotic love of fashion.

Don't Tell Fannie is leading a new and refreshing breed of fashion on the Gold Coast, with their chic boutiques that staunchly rebel against mass-produced style, say no to b-grade quality garments and genuinely support local and emerging Australian designers.

With a beautiful eclectic collection of sweet feminine garments, fun and quirky statement pieces, edgy ‘one offs’ and to-die-for accessories, this is one store with something to satisfy your fashion passion –  no matter what your style.

Owner Paige Lovell  believes when it comes to fashion it is important to not only look and feel sexy but to feel like you are rocking your own individual style.

"In a market flooded with items that all look the same, we aim to create a point of difference by offering people alternative fashion choices and an individual sense of style,” Paige said.

By supporting a large base of homemade designers, freshly replenishing their shelves each week and by only ever stocking three of the same piece, Don’t Tell Fannie are able to guarantee a unique shopping experience and provide quality, on-trend garments.

Priding themselves on friendly ‘old school’ customer service and honest and expert style advice, creating a complete look is made easy at Don’t Tell Fannie. "We take the time to tap into what each customer wants from their fashion experience and help create a look that is flattering and reflective of their personal style,” Paige said.

"Our main focus is for everyone to leave our store feeling confident about their purchase… and we would always rather lose a sale then send you home with something that doesn’t hit the mark!”

With a Facebook page, BLOG and regular VIP events, Don’t Tell Fannie’s genuine love for fashion and style is not only limited to the four walls of their store.

You can keep up-to-date with all the latest trends, upcoming promotions, incoming pieces and style tips and tricks through their Social Media platforms, or by simply attending a VIP event.

VIP events are a great way to scourer the store, bag a beautiful bargain, mingle with special guests and simply indulge in your love for fashion, over a glass of bubbly or a delicious cupcake!

Right now you will receive 20% off storewide with your ThinkPink loyalty card. Register for your complimentary card here.
